One reason why there are different versions of a logo is because a 3D intense logo might not be able to be printed accurately all the time, or might not transfer well in black and white. Basically, it's a simpler logo for a simpler application.
And don't worry about asking questions; it's how you gain knowledge and get answers! Hope this helps.
btw my condolences... I saw the black ribbon and I'm guessing you're in mourning... am I right?
